Cal AI

Photo-based calorie tracker where you snap a meal and AI estimates calories, protein, carbs and fat, built by teenage founders.

Cal AI

Cal AI launched in May 2024, built by then-17-year-old Zach Yadegari and Henry Langmack, two coding-camp friends who first met at age 10. Blake Anderson and Jake Castillo joined as co-founders handling marketing and operations. The app's core trick is photo-based food logging: point a phone at a plate, and the app combines the camera feed with the phone's depth sensor to estimate portion volume, then runs an AI model to output calories and macros. Entirely bootstrapped, Cal AI crossed $30 million in annual revenue within its first full year and reportedly reached $40 million-plus in the twelve months that followed, run by a team that never grew past roughly 30 people. In March 2026, MyFitnessPal acquired the app, folding its photo-scanning technology into MyFitnessPal's larger food database; the founding team, including Yadegari as CEO, stayed on after the deal. The acquisition followed a rocky stretch: Apple briefly pulled the app from the App Store in April 2026 over billing-disclosure complaints, and a reported data breach around the same period was said to affect more than 3 million users.
