Bytebase

Open-source database DevSecOps platform for schema migrations, SQL review, and access control, built by former Google Cloud SQL tech leads.

Bytebase was founded in 2021 by Tianzhou Chen and Danny Xu, engineers who had previously worked on Google Cloud SQL and Google's API infrastructure, and built the product they wished existed for managing database schema changes with the same rigor teams apply to application code — pull requests, review, CI checks, and rollback — rather than ad hoc scripts run by whoever has production access. The core product covers schema migrations, a SQL review engine with over 200 lint rules, GitOps-based change workflows, and role-based data access control across MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB, Snowflake, ClickHouse, and a dozen other engines. Bytebase later added an AI layer that can be taught a team's SQL naming conventions and standards in plain language, then flag schema changes that violate them automatically. The company is based in Mountain View, California, has raised a modest $3 million seed round, and the open-source core has been downloaded more than five million times.
