BandLab Technologies was founded in Singapore in 2015 by Meng Ru Kuok, who remains CEO, as part of Caldecott Music Group. The company's core product, the BandLab app, is a free browser- and mobile-based recording studio built to remove cost as a barrier to making and sharing music, and it has grown into one of the most-used music-creation platforms globally, particularly among younger and mobile-first creators. BandLab also owns Cakewalk, ReverbNation, and Sonicbids, giving it a foothold in both desktop DAW software and artist-services tools. The company has raised more than $140 million from investors including Vulcan Capital and Cercano Management, and closed a 2023 extension round that valued it at roughly $425 million. Rather than gating its AI features behind expensive add-ons, BandLab has built tools like SongStarter (instant beat and melody ideas) and Splitter (stem separation) directly into the free app, positioning cost as the company's main point of differentiation against subscription-based DAWs and sample services.
