Baichuan Intelligence

Beijing large-model lab founded by search veteran Wang Xiaochuan, now redirecting its Baichuan models toward clinical medicine.

Baichuan Intelligence was founded in Beijing in April 2023 by Wang Xiaochuan, the former CEO of search engine Sogou, alongside co-founder Ru Liyun, Sogou's onetime COO. The company built the Baichuan series of large language models, with Baichuan3 and Baichuan4 arriving within its first year and Baichuan4 topping SuperCLUE, the benchmark most widely used to rank Chinese-language models. Early investors included Alibaba, Tencent, Xiaomi and Shunwei Capital, and a $691 million round in mid-2024 pushed its valuation past several billion dollars, with the 2026 Global Unicorn List placing it at roughly $18.5 billion. In March 2025, Wang shut down Baichuan's enterprise sales teams for finance and education clients and reoriented the whole company around AI in healthcare, a shift he has described as building tools to 'create doctors, reform pathways, advance medicine.' That bet now anchors the product line: rather than chasing general-purpose chat traffic against Doubao or Kimi, Baichuan is putting its models to work on clinical reasoning, medical literature retrieval and diagnostic support, sold both directly to patients and through hospital partnerships.
