Automation Anywhere started in 2003 in San Jose as Tethys Solutions, founded by Mihir Shukla, Neeti Mehta Shukla, Ankur Kothari, and Rushabh Parmani, and took its current name in 2010. It was one of the first companies to sell RPA as a cloud-native, web-based control room rather than an on-premise desktop tool, which became a selling point once enterprises started worrying about managing large bot fleets. The current platform, Automation 360, combines attended and unattended bots with document automation, process discovery, and a Process Reasoning Engine introduced in 2024 to let bots make context-aware decisions rather than follow rigid scripts. AI Agent Studio lets customers build custom AI agents on top of that reasoning layer, and Automation Co-Pilot, formerly branded AARI, puts a conversational assistant inside everyday business apps for employees who aren't building automations themselves. Automation Anywhere remains privately held after raising roughly $840 million total, and competes directly with UiPath and SS&C Blue Prism for large enterprise automation contracts across banking, insurance, and healthcare.
