Aura Health was founded in San Francisco in 2015 by brothers Steve Lee and Daniel Lee, whose parents' painful divorce shaped their interest in building a more accessible mental wellness product. Rather than commissioning a fixed library of content the way earlier meditation apps did, Aura built a marketplace model, inviting outside therapists, coaches and meditation teachers to publish sessions, then using machine learning to recommend the right piece of content to the right user at the right moment based on how they say they're feeling. The app's library spans guided meditation, sleep stories and soundscapes, CBT-based exercises, breathwork, hypnosis, coaching sessions and even prayer content, aiming to be a single hub for different approaches to stress and sleep rather than a single-method app. Aura reports more than 8 million users and over 150 coaches and therapists contributing content through the platform. Aura has raised a mix of early VC funding, including from Cowboy Ventures and 1517 Fund, and additional community capital through equity crowdfunding rounds on platforms like Republic and Dealmaker Securities, putting its total raised in the low eight figures.
