Augment Code (legally Augment Inc.) was founded in 2022 by AI researcher Guy Gur-Ari and distributed-systems engineer Igor Ostrovsky. The company operated in stealth for about two years before publicly launching in April 2024, bringing on Scott Dietzen, former CEO of Pure Storage, as chief executive. The company builds an AI coding assistant that provides context-aware chat, code completions, agents, and guided edits by deeply indexing a team's codebase, positioning itself as a rival to GitHub Copilot with a focus on large enterprise codebases. Augment emerged from stealth in April 2024 with a $227 million Series B round at a $977 million post-money valuation, with investors including Sutter Hill Ventures, Index Ventures, Innovation Endeavors, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Meritech Capital, bringing total funding to $252 million including an earlier $25 million Series A.
