Maker of Jira and Confluence, now weaving its Rovo AI agents and search across its whole collaboration and software-development suite.

Atlassian was founded in Sydney in 2002 by Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, reportedly funded with a credit card, and built its early business on Jira for issue tracking and Confluence, launched in 2004, for team documentation. The company never built a traditional sales force, relying instead on word of mouth and self-serve adoption among developers, and it listed on the Nasdaq in December 2015 under the ticker TEAM. In 2024 Atlassian introduced Rovo, an AI layer that adds search, chat, and autonomous agents across Jira, Confluence, and connected third-party tools like Google Drive, GitHub, Slack, and Figma. Rovo reached general availability that October and rolled out to all Cloud subscribers in April 2025, followed by Rovo Dev, an AI coding agent aimed at Atlassian's large developer user base. The company is now globally headquartered in Sydney with a US headquarters in San Francisco, and employs more than 12,000 people across 14 countries. Scott Farquhar stepped down as co-CEO in 2024 to focus on family and philanthropy, leaving Mike Cannon-Brookes as sole CEO while Farquhar remains on the board.
