Atlan builds a data catalog and governance platform that data teams use to document what a dataset means, where it came from, and who is allowed to use it. Prukalpa Sankar and Varun Banka founded the company in 2019, growing it out of SocialCops, an earlier data-for-good venture the pair had built together after meeting as university classmates. The platform indexes metadata across a company's warehouses, BI tools, and pipelines, then layers search, lineage, and a conversational interface on top so a data consumer can ask a plain-language question instead of hunting through wikis or Slack threads. Atlan has positioned itself more recently as a context layer for AI systems, extending the catalog to serve as a source of governed metadata that agents and LLMs can query directly, alongside its established data lineage and active-governance features. The company has raised over $200 million, including a $105 million Series C in May 2024 led by GIC and Meritech Capital with participation from Salesforce Ventures, at a valuation near $750 million. Customers include WeWork, Plaid, Postman, Unilever, and Ralph Lauren, and Atlan has been named a Leader in Gartner's and Forrester's data governance and metadata management evaluations.
