Appsmith was founded in 2019 by Abhishek Nayak, Arpit Mohan, and Nikhil Nandagopal, and pitched itself from the start as the open-source alternative to proprietary internal-tool builders like Retool — the same drag-and-drop, database-bound approach, but with a free, self-hostable community edition and the source code on GitHub. Teams use it to build admin panels, support dashboards, and operational tools connected to 25-plus databases and any REST or GraphQL API, with the option to run entirely on their own infrastructure rather than a vendor's cloud. The company raised a $41 million Series B in June 2022, led by Insight Partners with participation from Accel, Canaan, and OSS Capital, bringing its total funding to roughly $51.5 million; it's based in Bengaluru with an additional office in San Francisco. Appsmith went through a workforce reduction in 2025 alongside a broader industry pullback in low-code hiring. More recently the platform added Appsmith AI, including a copilot called Appy that answers how-to questions and helps write JavaScript logic inside the editor, along with native LLM connectors for OpenAI, Google AI, and Anthropic that let builders wire AI actions like summarization and semantic search directly into an app without separate API key management.
