Altana AI

AI platform that maps global supply chains end-to-end for enterprise and government trade risk, compliance, and visibility.

Altana AI

Altana was founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 2018 by Evan Smith, Peter Swartz, and Raphael Tehranian, with former U.S. Customs and Border Protection commissioner Alan Bersin advising on the company's approach to trade compliance. The founding idea was to build a shared, AI-resolved map of the global supply chain rather than each company maintaining its own incomplete supplier list. Its platform, Altana Atlas, applies machine learning and entity resolution to billions of customs filings, shipment records, and corporate registries to build a knowledge graph connecting companies, facilities, and trade flows across multiple tiers. Enterprise customers including Boston Scientific, L.L.Bean, and Maersk use it to trace components and materials beyond their direct suppliers, while government users, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the UK Department for Business and Trade, use the same graph for sanctions, export-control, and forced-labor screening. Altana has raised over $320 million, including a $200 million Series C round in 2024 that pushed its valuation past $1 billion, with investors including GV, Activate Capital, and the US Innovative Technology Fund. Headcount has grown from roughly 150 employees in 2023 to around 270 more recently. Evan Smith remains CEO.
