The Allen Institute for AI, known as Ai2, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research institute headquartered in Seattle, Washington, founded in 2014 by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen with an endowment of roughly $300 million. Ai2 conducts and publishes AI research with a mission of fully open science, releasing not just model weights but also training code, data, and logs. Its best-known projects include OLMo, a fully open family of large language models (now on its third generation, OLMo 3) with openly published training data and recipes, the Tulu family of open instruction-tuning recipes, and Semantic Scholar, an AI-powered academic search engine used by millions of researchers. The institute has also received significant government support, including a combined $152 million from the U.S. National Science Foundation and NVIDIA for its NSF OMAI initiative, and is led on an interim basis by Peter Clark following Ali Farhadi's departure as CEO in 2026.
