Alitu grew out of The Podcast Host, an educational resource for podcasters that Colin Gray started in Dundee, Scotland in 2011. After years of hearing from readers who found professional audio tools like Audacity or Hindenburg too technical, Gray's team built Alitu as a guided, automated alternative, launching it as its own product in 2018. The platform combines call recording, automatic audio cleanup (leveling, noise removal, and normalization applied without manual settings), a music and intro-outro library, one-click publishing, and built-in podcast hosting into a single workflow aimed at people who want to make a show without becoming an audio engineer first. It also includes transcription and a basic podcast website builder. In 2025, Alitu and The Podcast Host were acquired by Rocketable, a Y Combinator-backed software company, in a deal that included layoffs as the businesses were integrated - a transition Gray has publicly described as the hardest part of the process. The brands continue to operate under Rocketable's ownership as competition in podcast production software intensifies.
